WHAT IS AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (ASD)?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a long life developmental disability for which there is no known cure, affecting around 1 in every 125 people. There has been an alarming 10 fold increase in the rate of children diagnosed in the last 10 years. ASD is caused by a dysfunction in the central nervous system and this affects how the person perceives and interprets their world, particularly the social environment.

The Main Criteria used for Diagnosis:

  • Difficulty with Social relationships
  • Difficulty with communication, both verbal and non-verbal
  • Difficulty with imaginative play
  • Activities are limited and restricted (generally repetitive & obsessive)

Autism impacts on a person by impairing their ability to communicate - learn to understand and use language; interact socially with people; make sense of their surroundings including an inability to cope with change in routines.

The majority of people with Autism will continue to need support throughout their lives.

Autism West Support Inc seeks to support parents with children with ASD to cope with the challenges they face everyday ensuring every opportunity is given to allow them to meet their full potential. For further information on Autism West Support Inc, please visit their website.
